What Are Annealed & Pickled (AP) Tubes?

Annealing is a heat treatment process where tubes are heated to a controlled high temperature and then slowly cooled. This relieves internal stresses, restores ductility, and softens the material — making the tube easier to bend, form, and weld. The process also ensures a uniform grain structure throughout the tube wall.

Pickling follows annealing. The tube surface is treated with an acid solution (typically a mix of nitric and hydrofluoric acid) to remove the oxide layer, heat tint, and scale formed during the annealing process. This restores the tube’s natural chromium-oxide passive layer — which is what gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance.

The result is an Annealed & Pickled (AP) Tube with excellent corrosion resistance, a clean matte silver surface, stress-free structure, and superior weldability.
